A large percentage of the population believes in some form of the afterlife. A large percentage of the paranormal field believes that not only do we live on in some way after death, but we can actually communicate with them in different ways. While it is a hotly debated topic within the paranormal, there is no shortage of books in the area covering the afterlife and communication. These are some of my favourites.
Talking to the dead by George Noory and Rosemary Ellen Gully
Throughout history, people have sought ways to contact the dead and spirits. Such experiences challenge beliefs and often set people on a path of deeper exploration, looking for validation--and ways to have controlled, direct contact. Do spirit communication devices really work? What are the prospects of someday being able to pick up a cell phone or sit in front of a webcam and talk to the Other Side? While proof of contact is still elusive, there is an abundance of tantalizing evidence and experience to inspire people.
For the past century, inventors have been inspired by the spirits themselves to create telephone, video, radio, and computers to attempt real-time, two-way communication with the dead and other entities.
Talking to the Dead explores the colorful history and personalities behind spirit communications, weaving together spirituality, metaphysics, science, and technology. It examines the idea that new technology can connect to the ancient and universal wisdom of the music of the spheres; that contact with the spirit realms can be made through the vibrations of sound.
I must confess that I am a huge George Noory fan. He has such a gift of banter. If you don't know who he is, he is the host of the widely popular Coast to Coast AM and also had his own show on the Gaia network where he would interview people about different paranormal topics. He has an awesome sense of humour and a way of getting the best out of his guests. In this book he teams up with another one of my favourite writers Rosemary Ellen Gully which is a combination of transcripts from shows where callers would call in with their stories through to Rosemary explaining different ways people communicate. It talks about the history of spirit boxes and EVP for example while also talking about the experiences people have all over the world and throughout time communicating with the afterlife. I read this book across the span of 3 days I couldn't put it down I loved it!
Surviving Death: A Journalist Investigates Evidence for an Afterlife by Leslie Kean
In this groundbreaking book, award-winning journalist and New York Times bestselling author Leslie Kean investigates the unexplained continuity of the human psyche after death. By now you have likely watched or at least heard of the Netflix series of the same name. In fact, it was based on this book. If you watched the series, you know exactly what to expect. The book in a lot of ways is a lot better than the series and goes a bit deeper than what the series was able to. While it is not just about afterlife communication, it offers an insight into physical mediumship among other areas not as widely talked about in the mainstream paranormal area. I feel if you can only choose one book from this list, this is the one to get. Watch the Netflix series and then read the book!
Life with the Afterlife: 13 Truths I Learned about Ghosts by Amy Bruni
Amy Bruni, co-star of Kindred Spirits and one of the world's leading paranormal investigators, has learned a lot about ghosts over her years of research and first-hand experience. Now, in Life with the Afterlife, she shares the insight she has gleaned and how it has shaped her unique approach to interacting with the spirits of the dead and those who encounter them.
From her earliest supernatural encounters as a child, through her years appearing on Ghost Hunters and the creation of her company Strange Escapes, which offers paranormal excursions to some of America's most notoriously haunted destinations, and into her current work on The Travel Channel's Kindred Spirits, this book is full of astonishing and deeply moving stories of Amy's efforts to better understand the dead but not yet departed. With Amy's bright humor and fierce compassion for both those who are haunted and those who are haunting, Life with the Afterlife is an eye-opening look at what connects us as people, in life and beyond.
Admittedly I had reservations before I read this. I did expect it to be the sort of generic book we expect from paranormal celebrities. I was pleasantly surprised. It is a really well-written book with great storytelling from the perspective of Amy. Regardless of what you think of paranormal reality television shows, I have always liked Amy. The way she presents herself from what I have seen on TV is much more representative of how the majority of us investigate the paranormal. There is no exaggerating. She sticks to what works for her which is mainly EVP and historical research. One thing I love is that her show Kindred Spirits is not filmed in night vision. They have the lights on and don't play into the typical hype that most other paranormal reality shows play into. The book is obviously from her own perspective with her own ideas, theories and experiences, however, it is not the book you probably think that it is. If you are a fan already you will love the book. If you are someone that just enjoys the paranormal, you will probably enjoy this book. I didn't agree with some of the points of view in the book but that is true of almost any book. Try to put your bias aside and give this one a go. I'm glad I did! This one is worth the read and like me, I feel you might be pleasantly surprised!
These are just a few recommendations, on a topic where there are endless amounts of books that could have been selected.
