Regardless of your views, you must be respectful!

We all have different opinions, but respect is key. If you go into a location being disrespectful to their wishes, it can cause damage to the field because they might just close the doors to everyone else.

We all have a story of where we have heard of someone who has done some reckless or disrespectful. How do we know about it? Usually it is because the rest of the paranormal field has had to suffer the consequences of one person or group's action. Sometimes it can be repairable albeit over many many years, but sometimes enough is enough and that door is closed for good.

I myself know from dealing with locations that some of them allowed paranormal investigations years ago. They had simple processes or rules set up as most venues will have. The group would turn up unannounced and behave in ways that upset family members connected to the property. What was the result? Instead of that group getting kicked out (which they did) instead they just said "you know what? No more paranormal investigators are allowed in here period!" It was the disrespect shown that left a bad taste in their mouth. It happens once and they think that we are all the same.  I can give you so many examples of this happening. One location we used to access quite frequently. Someone else came up and did something really dodgy they were unhappy about (and they voiced their concern beforehand yet the group still went ahead) and suddenly we couldn’t get in there anymore.  In fact the door was closed to paranormal investigations permanently.

When you go to a location or deal with a person, they have a certain viewpoint and place certain conditions on you, regardless of if you agree with them or not, you follow them. You show the person this respect. If they for example tell you we don't want you to use a Ouija board. Even if you think Ouija boards are rubbish and harmless, you don't use it if it will upset the owner. Why? Out of respect. You may not agree with it but it is their property, it is their rules and it is an honour for you that they have allowed you to be there. No one is entitled to anything. You are given access and you need to show respect.

Obviously, this is inspired by the recent episode of Ghost Adventures. Zak Bagans had Annabelle attend his museum. There were 2 conditions put on the team from investigator Tony Spera who is in ownership of the doll. He had to monitor the investigation and no one could touch her. His reasoning for this was because he felt she was so evil it was a risk. I necessarily don't think she is possessed by the devil but if I was given this very special opportunity and told 'don't touch her', I wouldn't. I don’t agree with it but I would respect it. During the investigation Zak kept saying he wanted to touch her where he was told several times no. Tony then came in to end the investigation and just before he did, Zak of course touched her. He was very angry and left. He has now said that Annabelle will not be appearing on any more shows as a result of this. A perfect example of how the actions of one person can ruin things for everyone else.

We have some really good people in the field. We also have some really arrogant people as well. I do believe in karma and believe that those who keep their heads down and do good things ultimately prevail. Maybe I am naive and live in my own little world, but I do have hope. All I can do it ask you all, please be respectful when you are out in the field. Be respectful to the location, to the people, to the families and to the spirits that may be there. Don't be the reason no one else is allowed to go there. It is an honour for people to let us into these places or into their homes and we need to remember this and treat it as such. As I have said before, be known for the all the right reasons .... not the wrong ones!
